The Grotto’s Annual Christmas Festival of Lights is just around the corner, and we want to thank you for your interest in volunteering this year. The Festival would not take place without our wonderful volunteers!
We have both indoor and outdoor positions available. Most shifts last approximately three hours.

Ticket Scanner (outside but under a tent)
As a ticket scanner, you will be positioned at the beginning of the entry path into the Festival. You are responsible for greeting each visitor and scanning their electronic or physical ticket. A Festival of Lights staff member will be positioned near you to help answer questions.
Plaza Greeter (outside but under a tent)
This position is a welcoming position for the visitors as they enter the plaza. Answer general questions from guests such as what time the entertainment in the tent begins, where the choirs will be singing, and where the bathrooms are located. This position will also direct foot traffic so that guests do not use this path as an exit.
Chapel Greeter (indoors but exposed to the cold)
Chapel greeters are responsible for welcoming visitors into the Chapel of Mary for choral concerts. Volunteers will stand at the glass doors and open them for guests entering and exiting the Chapel. No food or beverage is allowed in the Chapel. Men are asked to remove their hats while in the church.
Food Booth (indoors)
By law, food booth volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Assist the on-site supervisor with filling orders for hot chocolate and snacks. All volunteers must wash their hands upon arrival to the Food Booth and after using the bathroom. No consumption of food while in the booth itself is allowed.
Gift Shop (indoors)
Assist Gift Shop Staff with various duties such as refilling display cases, greeting visitors, and answer questions. While this position is mainly indoors, please be prepared to be standing outside to hold doors open for guests.
Visitor Center (indoors)
Visitor Center Volunteers will assist staff by greeting guests, answer questions, and help with refilling the votive candle display. While this position is mainly indoors, please be prepared to be standing outside to hold doors open for guests.
For more information about any of the positions listed above, please contact Samantha Kocher at volunteer@thegrotto.org.
COVID Protocol
- We kindly ask that individuals follow the guidance set forth by the CDC if they have tested positive or have been exposed to COVID within 10 days of their shift at Festival of Lights.
Clothing
- Dress warmly in layers for the weather! We suggest warm slacks, water resistant rubber soled shoes or boots, and a winter rain resistant coat. Don’t forget warm socks, gloves, and a scarf/ear muffs/hat! All volunteer positions are under covering but better to be over dressed than to get cold.
