Seven Days of Service

Please Join the Servite Friars in a Special Week of Service

Inspired by the Mission of the Order of Servants of Mary (Servites), the community of friars who minister at The Grotto, we invite you to join us in this week-long event, celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows and The Grotto’s 96th Anniversary.

Every day this week, we encourage you to follow the example of the Servites, a community committed to being of service to God and all people, by participating in one – or many – of the activities. We hope you will join us in helping our neighbors.

Many of the projects can be done from home. We will provide instructions and make sure your donations are delivered. Completed projects can be dropped off at The Grotto during the entire month of September.

We are in particular need of donations for our food drive on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Canned foods and personal hygiene items are the most needed.

We are honored to partner with local service organizations and look forward to working with the community to make a difference.

In Response to the Fires

When we designed this week of service, we were not expecting the devastating fires which are currently still burning around our region.
We pray for those who have been impacted by the tragic loss of life and property, we pray for the heroes still fighting these fires, and we pray for everyone who is helping those in need.

In response to these ever-growing needs, we have added some elements to this week of service by incorporating or adding fire response service to each day.

The Servites Today: Serving our neighbors wherever they are

The Rule of St. Augustine

The ancient Rule of St. Augustine, which provides the framework for the fundamental charism and spirit of the Servites, begins with this statement from the holy Gospel:

“Before all else, brothers, we must love God and our neighbor, because these are the greatest commandments.”

The Servite Constitutions

This document, which describes the Order in detail, makes these two declarations, one at the beginning, and one and the end, describing and inspiring the life of the Friar-Servants … “who we are” and “why we are.”

Article 1: The Order of Friar-Servants of Mary … is a community gathered together in the name of Jesus the Lord … Moved by the Spirit, we commit ourselves, as did our First Fathers, to witness the Gospel in fraternal communion, and to be at the service of God and all people, drawing abiding inspiration from Mary, Mother and Servant of the Lord. (Edited)

Article 299 (Epilogue): … We shall have only relationships of peace, mercy, justice, and constructive love toward creatures. In our commitment of service, the figure of Mary at the foot of the cross shall be our model. Since the Son of Man is still being crucified in his brothers and sisters, we, Servants of his mother, wish to be with her at the foot of those countless crosses in order to bring comfort … Remembering that we are to be judged according to the words, “I was hungry and you gave me food to eat, naked and you clothed me …” (Matthew 25:35-36). We wish to renounce our own interests in order to follow Jesus … (Edited)
