Temperatures in the Portland area can vary by more than 20 degrees. Historically, the Rocky Butte area, where The Grotto is located, is one of the cooler parts of town. Add our thick layer of firs, redwoods and cedars and the scorching hot day can turn into a very pleasant walk in the woods.

The Upper Gardens offer many places to sit quietly on a shady bench, and the Stations of the Cross trail, located on the lower level, is particularly shady.
