THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES
1. The Annunciation: The angel Gabriel announces God’s plan for Mary. Mary responds with generosity, trust, and faith to the angel’s request.
May we have trust that God is with us in our daily lives; may we follow Mary’s example of generosity.
2. The Visitation: Mary goes to help her cousin Elizabeth who is also pregnant.
May we be mindful of those around us who are in need.
3. The Birth of Jesus: Giving birth in a lowly stable and far from home must have been challenging for Mary and Joseph, and yet they joyfully welcomed the birth of Jesus.
May we find the good in every unexpected situation.
4. The Presentation in the Temple: Following Jewish law, Mary and Joseph made an offering to God for their child. Simeon and Anna, two devout people in the temple, each recognized this child as the anointed one of God.
May we recognize that God has a plan for each of us.
5. Finding Jesus in the Temple: Every year the holy family would celebrate Passover at the temple in Jerusalem. Jesus was twelve years old and engaged in discussion with the elders of the temple; he was unaware when the rest of his family had headed home. A few days later the family found him at the temple. St. Luke tells us they returned home, and Jesus grew in wisdom and grace.
May we, too, learn insight and wisdom from those around us who have lived long lives.
