Centennial Celebration

The Grotto, the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary with a year full of celebrations.

The Centennial kicks off Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, with an opening Mass at noon in The Grotto Plaza.

Upcoming celebrations will include special liturgical events, concerts, and new exhibits. And stay tuned for more information about The Grotto’s new Interpretive Center, scheduled to open in the late summer of 2024.

The Centennial celebration will conclude in September of 2024 with an Anniversary Mass.

At the dedication of the shrine in 1924, Archbishop Alexander Christie proclaimed:

“Let this be a sanctuary of peace for all peoples of the earth and surely in this day a sanctuary is needed. Torn with differences, strife, and grief, the world needs sanctuary where the human spirit can seek peace and consolation.”
