Pilgrimage to The Grotto

The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother is honored to welcome pilgrims celebrating the Year of Hope.

The following opportunities will be offered daily. And all are invited to enjoy our peaceful sanctuary by visiting our beautiful gardens.

Mass

The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother (The Grotto) celebrates Mass every day of the year in the Chapel of Mary. From May through September, the 10 a.m. and noon Sunday Masses are celebrated outdoors in The Grotto Plaza, weather permitting.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Confession is offered Monday – Saturday from 10-11:45 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. throughout the year. The priest office is located next to The Grotto Interpretive Center.

Recitation of the Rosary

Recitation of the Rosary takes place 30 minutes before each Mass throughout the week.

The Grotto’s Gardens

The Grotto is a 54-acre sanctuary in the middle of the city of Portland, Oregon. It is separated by 110-foot cliff, which divides the Plaza Level with the Upper Gardens. An elevator brings pilgrims up and down the cliff.

The plaza level is open daily and free to all. It includes Our Lady’s Grotto, the Chapel of Mary, the Stations of the Cross path, the Christus Garden, The Grotto Gift Shop, Conference Center, and our new Interpretive Center.

The Upper Gardens is a scenic walk through glorious gardens, past cultural shrines and beautiful statues. It takes you past the Monastery of Our Sorrowful Mother, and to the Meditation Chapel, a spectacular building with a magnificent view. There is a small fee to visit the Upper Gardens.
